Bold Contemporary Designs with a Historic Perspective

Bench Architects are renowned for their bold, contemporary adaptations of historic buildings, introducing exciting new possibilities with modern detail and design - including the use of structural glass.

Through an extensive knowledge of traditional construction methods and materials, and a meticulous approach to research, we have an excellent record of achieving Planning Consents for designs of extensions or new buildings in historic contexts. We have also been able to establish mutual trust and confidence with English Heritage, Planning and Conservation Officers and Building Control.

Our designs have followed three broad strategies:

  • Structures which are contemporary in design and act as a foil to the adjacent historic environment.
  • Subterranean - partially top lit structures harmonious with the landscape.
  • Structures which are either an Academic Pastiche or careful exercise in the local vernacular.
